What is the Kingdom of God?

The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand

In this post I will try to explain how I understand what the kingdom of God is, and explain Jesus’ words about the Kingdom of God being in us.

When we look up the Greek word “kingdom”, we find that it usually means “rule” or “dominion”, and not an actual physical kingdom. This is important, and to really understand many verses of the Bible about the kingdom, it’s better to replace that word with the mentioned nouns or the noun “royal power”.

Firstly I would like to explain the reason why the kingdom of God is being manifested in this world the way that it is.

We read that at first God tried to establish His rule on Earth, which is the Kingdom of God, through Israel:

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Exo 19:5-6

Israel was supposed to become the priests of the earth through whom the will of God would be done on earth. So they were supposed to be the people through whom the rule of heaven is implemented on earth. This failed because the people of Israel did not obey the Torah. God divorced Israel (Jeremiah 3:8) but also promised that a new covenant will be given to them (Jeremiah 31:31) after some time, when His wrath would be no more.

He told that that new covenant will be the Torah no longer given on stone but written on the tablets of their hearts (Jeremiah 31:33), and that’s why it’s called “new”. It was a new way of giving the Torah that would be much more effective than how it was given before.

This new covenant came through Jesus, because as a result of His resurrection and ascension, believers were given the Holy Spirit which establishes the heavenly rule in believers and their hearts become sensitive to the living Torah. So they’re no longer natural men that need to be restrained with the external law, but they become new creatures who want to be obedient and become obedient to the law if they allow themselves to be transformed through the Spirit living in them.

So there’s a big difference in new and old covenants; because people under the old covenant found the Torah difficult to obey, but under the new covenant believers have the Holy Spirit which helps them to be obedient and because of its presence they want to be obedient to the law. What’s more, the failure to observe the law no longer requires blood sacrifice or even being stoned to death, but only sincere repentance because Jesus has become the High Priest always interceding for us before the Father (Hebrews 4:14; 7:25).

So although the rule of God was rejected by Israel, all the nations can be reconciled with the Most High through Jesus. Since they die to the law when they are baptized, the law no longer condemns them. And when they receive the Holy Spirit, the heavenly rule starts being established in their very souls.

Therefore God wanted to establish His heavenly rule on earth through Israelites, but they were disobedient and failed to become the priests of the Most High on earth. Yet this new covenant is going to succeed, because it changes the person from the inside and not outside – through his very own heart and the regeneration of his spirit.

The Kingdom of God is now being implemented through obeying the Torah written on the tablets of believers’ hearts. And the Holy Spirit gives the believers the strength to overcome the temptations of the world which would render them ineffective.

Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21), and it is true. Every believer who receives the Holy Spirit starts being ruled by God and not the world – if they allow this to happen. Therefore the heavenly rule, the Kingdom of God, becomes established in them, and they become the lights of the world, by their actions and words defeating the darkness of this world and preparing it for the literal reign of God.

In the Bible we read that God overlooked the foolishness of false religions for a long time (Acts 17:30), but now everywhere men are required to repent and change these ignorant ways, as they are prepared to enter into the kingdom of God.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit gifts

The Holy Spirit gifts of raising the dead, casting out demons and healing are given to us so that unbelievers would encounter the power of God and this would make them believe in Him; it is given to us so that unbelievers can be saved and enter into an actual kingdom of God that will come at the end of the world.

Therefore it is ignorant for some pastors to teach that the Holy Spirit gifts are no more. They will exist as long as this heaven and earth stand; because these are the tools through which we convert unbelievers. When there would be no unbelievers but all will serve the living God, then only those gifts will lose their purpose and therefore will be no more. But this will only happen when the literal rule of God comes to this earth.

We find in the New Testament that the largest conversions to Christianity occurred when people would witness the power of God working through the believers. Exercise of the Holy Spirit gifts causes mass conversions. Pastors do a great harm to believers when they make them think that their gifts are non-existent, or even worse, come from Satan, because then believers neglect to develop them and therefore do not use the power they are given to bring many people into the kingdom of God.

Preparation for the kingdom

Those believers who receive the Holy Spirit are already the citizens of the kingdom of God, and the actual entry will be only a formality if they continue in faith.

I’m talking only about those believers who allow that kingdom to rule them, and not about the ones that ignore this rule and choose the ways of the world. Because it’s told in the Bible that those acting like a dog who returns to its own vomit will suffer from the end that’s worse than the one they would have experienced before knowing Jesus (2 Peter 2:20-22).

So those who allow themselves to be sanctified through the Holy Spirit and become holy, which means separate and different from the world, allow the rule of heaven, the kingdom of God, to be established within them, and therefore they become the lights of the world showing others the way.

Be set apart

Those are indeed already citizens of the New Jerusalem, and they help others to become such citizens as well.

Therefore the kingdom of God is not only the actual rule of God on this earth that will surely happen in the future, but the kingdom of God is happening now in those who have been transformed after accepting Jesus and have become the new creation, the future citizens of the New Jerusalem.

Many Christians pray a daily prayer that includes words “Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven”, but how many really allow the will of God to be done in their lives? Because the change on earth happens through the efforts of each individual, and a person who refuses to be ruled by God but recites this prayer anyway is a hypocrite.

Sanctification first starts externally and then it moves deeper and deeper into the person. You will be sanctified in appearance first: you will stop using make up, jewelry, wearing inappropriate clothes; when you comply with this, you will then start being sanctified in your mind, YHWH changing selfish patterns of the mind and cleansing it from all impurities of traits such as vanity, hatred, competition, pride and so forth.

And then it moves into the deepest levels of self where it destroys the very selfishness that’s of Satan which drives us to use our own wisdom to survive in this world, the trait that was with us since our fall.

This especially applies to self-sufficiency, and destroys it so that the person relies on no one else but God, and this is the final sanctification that very few will have the strength to go through, but since Jesus asked us to follow Him, and He broke in himself His soul’s desire and was obedient till His very death though that wasn’t His will (Luke 22:42), so should we follow His steps to be sanctified and glorified as He was.

Therefore the rule of heaven starts within each individual, and now most Christians resist even the most basic requirements of sanctification, like not looking like the world, and not being lukewarm because of the different opinions of the world about religion and righteousness. Many Christians are quick to betray what they stand for (thus betraying Jesus) whenever they are challenged by a pagan public opinion. I don’t think Jesus would take it lightly on the day of judgement, because He said that those who deny Him will be denied by Him before His Father (Matthew 10:33).

How can any other deeper sanctification take place if Christians rebel against these most basic things they have to get rid of in their lives? How could this happen if the core within them bends and twists whenever pagans challenge what they stand for? Therefore I know that only very few will get fully sanctified, and become real living sacrifices to God. (Romans 12:1).

The Kingdom of God is come down to the earth through all believers. We are given the power to bind and loose, and whatever we bind on earth, it will be bound to in heaven, and whatever we loose on earth, will be loosed in heaven. This proves that we are already rulers in heavens, and through our good actions on this earth we establish that heavenly rule on earth.

Being saved and continuing to live as the world makes Christians lose the whole purpose of them being saved. They become as salt which has lost its savour (Matthew 5:13). We are saved for the purpose of preparing others for the kingdom of God and allowing the kingdom of God to be manifested through us. If we don’t do this, we cannot expect God to tell these words about us:

Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

(Matthew 25:21)

If we cannot be faithful even in those few things He expects us to do in this world, we will be like a servant who did not make profit from the talent that he was given by God, and who received this answer from God as a result of his failure to be productive for the Kingdom of God:

Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

(Matthew 25:26-30)

I think it’s important to pay attention to the parables in the Bible that are to do with our usefulness for the kingdom of God. We are seen as plants which are expected to produce good fruit. And those who don’t, are gathered by angels to be burnt. Only those who are useful are gathered into the barns.

I had two plants that I use for my skincare. These are two aloe vera plants. One of them recently stopped growing, and after watering it and observing if it starts growing, I eventually had to throw it away because it has become useless – despite of my attempts to increase its growth.

As soon as I decided that the plant would no longer be useful and therefore I would need to throw it away, I remembered that God also expects us to produce fruit, and those who don’t produce fruits, are seen as good for nothing. It was easy for me to throw that plant into the bin because it wasn’t contributing to anything good; so I believe it will be the same in the last days. Those who think that God owes them something and who don’t think it important to contribute to the kingdom in some way, will be treated as those plants who are good for nothing.

So let’s allow the rule of heaven to be established in our hearts, minds and bodies, so that we become living sacrifices to God and that our Heavenly Father is pleased with us. Let’s allow the rule of Heaven to be established in ourselves so that we preserve our spirit, soul and body whole for entering into life (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

Let’s develop every single gift we are given for the glory of God, and I’m not talking only about the gifts of the Holy Spirit but the gifts we had since our birth or later. If you have a beautiful voice, sing to God so that others through you get closer to the Heavenly Father. If you have the talent to write books, write about God. If you have teaching ability, teach about God. If you inspire people, inspire them to get closer to God.

And, of course, we should always use the gifts of the Holy Spirit to destroy the works of the devil and to establish the rule of God on earth. We should not be afraid to confront those who teach children to live in sin, like for them to tolerate and accept homosexuality. We should cast out demons from people if we are called into such ministry. We should share our prophetic visions and dreams if they indeed come from God for the edification of the whole body of Christ. We should not be afraid to confront false preachers who are responsible for scattering the sheep.

We should strive to develop and manifest the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God and for making unbelievers turn to our Heavenly Father as a result, for the gifts of the Holy Spirit are direct manifestations of God.

Since most Christians don’t have the Holy Spirit as a result of false teachings of pastors, churches have become powerless, as the Holy Spirit is not there. So there’s no reason for unbelievers to be converted, because anyone can talk, but it’s the actions that people pay more attention to. So if pastors and born-again believers start really aligning themselves to the will of God, they will gain power and authority from God to do extraordinary healings and other divine works, which will provide the reason for others to turn to faith.

Let’s maximize the God-given potentials in this life so that we contribute to the best of our ability towards establishing the rule of heaven on this earth, so that in the life to come we are given five or ten times the responsibility we had on this earth as a result of being faithful servants of God and helping to establish His rule on earth through firstly allowing the Most High to establish His rule in ourselves.
